40th Birthday Party Decorations
Before we jump into party ideas, I just want to share a few fun party decorations that will elevate your party. These are must-haves!
Photo Booth
First up, a photo booth. Do not skip this!
It is a fun way for all your guests to get into the birthday party spirit and capture everyone who came to celebrate.
Keep it as simple as you want or you can get pretty elaborate.
Here are a few easy photo booth items.
One Halloween, I created a It’s The Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown photo area using cardboard and acrylic paint.
It took a little bit to make but it turned out epic and that made it worth it.
Birthday Pictures
Print pictures (as 8x10s, at least) of your husband when he was growing up, even better if they are his actual birthday pictures.
It will be just as much fun for him to look at them as it will be for your guests to see them.
Walking Decorations
For my dad’s 40th birthday party, his sister made party shirts with pictures of my dad on them for my siblings and me to wear.
At the time I was 14 and the t-shirt I had on, my dad was 14 in that picture. All our ages lined up like that and it was so fun.
She used white t-shirts and iron-on transfer paper to make them.
People still talk about this one and that was over 25 years ago!
40th Birthday Party Ideas For Husband
40th Birthday Party Theme
This is about the easiest idea – look who’s turning 40.
There are so many decorations for this and here are a few to get you started.
Backyard BBQ
If the weather is nice for your hubby’s party, have a backyard BBQ.
Who doesn’t love grilling up burgers, hotdogs, brats, and chicken?
If you want to go big, you can do steak. My husband loves steak on his birthday.
What kind of grill do you have? We have a regular gas one but I have heard so many good things about this Flat Top Grill. Let me know in the comments below.
Outdoor Movie
You can plan an outdoor movie along with a backyard BBQ or do this idea all on its own.
Check out this movie projector and screen.
Set up a movie theater snack bar with popcorn, sweet treats, and other goodies.
Don't forget to spray your yard for bugs ahead of time if they get bad in your area otherwise, you won't last staying outside.
Casino Night
Does your husband like to play cards? Have a casino night.
If he doesn’t have them already, you can get him a nice set of poker chips as a gift.
Mexican Fiesta
Tacos and tequila anyone, um yes, please!
Put together a taco bar. It is so easy – taco meat, lettuce, cheese, olives, tomatoes, corn, rice, beans, onions, sour cream, guacamole, salsa, taco sauce, chips, and taco shells. What am I missing?
I know what I am missing, the drinks. Margaritas, oh yeah. To make the best margaritas of your life, you have to start by using the Margaritaville Margarita Machine.
You can get a full-sized sombrero for the birthday boy and fun sombrero headbands for other guests to wear.
If there will be kids at the party, you can include a pinata or 2.
Camping
If camping is right up your alley, plan a camping adventure for him. This could be with you or you can send him off with his buddies.
Girl, I will go camping and we have a tent but gosh, a camper would be more comfortable. Hmm, maybe someday.
Sports
Get him tickets to his favorite sports team. Book a hotel for the weekend and go out to eat before the game.
Destination Travel
Plan a trip with a few close friends and/or family. It could be as simple as a few towns away or fly out to Vegas for the weekend.
Wine Tasting/Brewery Tour
Book a party bus and go on a wine tasting or a brewery tour, whichever you know your husband will enjoy the most.
We have done both of these and they are amazing.
Golfing
Guys and golf, even if it isn’t their “thing” they still go and have a good time.
Get another couple and hit the links. Or drop him off with his buddies and pick them up later. Sometimes they just want a sober cab!
Murder Mystery Party
If you are planning to have a decent-sized group, try a murder mystery party.
Ask everyone to dress the part, most of them will!
I have a large immediate family (35 and counting) and we have done a few of these for bachelorette parties and even at Christmas. So much fun.
You can find a variety of Murder Mystery Party packets here.
Bucket List Bash
Plan a party for something on his bucket list. Maybe it is seeing something epic, taking a trip somewhere, or even going skydiving.
He will have all the feels because you are completely making it all about him!
Dinner Boat Cruise
You can book just yourselves for a dinner cruise or a whole party. Everyone gets relaxed on the water.
Concert
Is there a band he has been wanting to see? Get him tickets. Ask a few close friends and/or family to join you.
Fancy Restaurant Dinner
How fancy are you wanting to get? Have a cocktail party at a fancy restaurant.
Pirates
If your husband loves pirates then this is the theme for him.
Our neighbor loves pirates and did this party.
He had pirate yard blow-ups (find them in the Halloween section), and everyone wore costumes, and lots of decorations. The drink coolers were even decorated as treasure chests.
80s Themed
Oh man, an 80s-themed party is such a hoot and I know your husband will have fun dressing up for this one. All the neon colors and hair bands, need I say more?
Game Night
Is your husband a homebody? Have a game night and invite a few friends over. Make a bunch of appetizers and snack food.
Catch Phrase and Pictionary are fun games for a group.
Color Themed Party
One of my friends loves the color red and tied it into her 30th birthday party – everyone was asked to wear red or black and then we all went out to eat and hit up a few bars after.
It was so much fun.
Roaring 20s Party
This is an amazing party; we have done it before.
There are so many women's costumes and men’s costumes you can find for it.
If it is at your house, turn it into a speakeasy.
Use cardboard boxes as liquor boxes. Have a code name to get in. Hang up wanted posters, you can make them you know.
African Safari
An African Safari for a 40th birthday party, are you sure? You bet I am.
We put together this party for my husband because a real-life African Safari is on his bucket list.
The entire inside of our house was decorated like a jungle with streamers, balloons, and huge fake leaves.
We also got animal masks for all the kids to wear. I am not sure who had more fun – my husband or all the kids.
Disco Party
Bust out the disco ball, afro hair, and leisure suits.
Ice Cream Social
If your husband wants to keep it low-key, family-friendly, and short, have an ice cream social. It will be a gigantic hit with all the kids.
If you are feeling extra, pick up this ice cream maker and whip up homemade ice cream ahead of time. It is so easy and doesn’t take long at all.
Best of all, it tastes oh so good.
You can create an ice cream toppings bar with lots of sauces, candies, nuts, and even whipped cream. Don't forget the cherries😊.
Scavenger Hunt
Break your guests up into teams and send them on a scavenger hunt in your neighborhood or around town.
Set rules like a time limit and photo proof or it didn’t happen kind of thing.
Make the items the teams are looking for clever like riddles or keep them straightforward.
This one is a blast.
