Kitchen Supplies

I know you are dying to make these Seven Layer Bars. However, before we get baking, let’s talk about the kitchen supplies that will help you make this fantastic dessert.

Rolling Pin

Quart Storage Bag or Gallon Storage Bag

Can Opener

9 x 13 inch Baking Dish

Old Fashioned 7 Layer Bars

Ingredients

  • 1 Stick Butter
  • 1 Package of Graham Crackers – Crushed
  • 1 Can Sweet and Condensed Milk
  • ½ Package of Chocolate Chips
  • ½ Package of Butterscotch Chips
  • ½ Cup Coconut Flakes
  • ½ Cup Chopped Walnuts

Ingredients Tips

Using salted or unsalted butter – it is up to you. I have tried both and either way it is delicious.

There are packages of chopped walnuts, which is really handy. However, you can also buy bigger walnuts and chop them to the size you want.

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F.
  2. While the oven is preheating, place 1 stick of butter in your baking dish and place it in the oven.  You want the butter to melt but not burn, so keep an eye on it.  Remove from the oven when the butter is melted.
  3. While the butter is melting, remove the Graham Crackers from their package and place them in the quart storage bag or gallon storage bag.  Squeeze most of the air out before sealing it up.
  4. Use the rolling pin to crush all of the graham crackers to a sand-like consistency.
  5. When the butter is done melting and out of the oven, add the crushed graham crackers to it and press them down all over the pan to make a crust layer. PLEASE BE CAREFUL, your pan will be hot!
  6. Next, cover the graham cracker layer with the sweet and condensed milk.
  7. Then, add your chocolate chips and butterscotch chips.  This will not be a completely solid layer.
  8. Layer the coconut flakes on.
  9. Finally, top it with the chopped walnuts.
  10. Bake for 18 – 20 minutes.
  11. Cool completely before cutting.

Helpful Tips

  • You can melt the butter in your microwave as well if you don’t want to work with a hot pan or if you have kids helping you make this dessert.
  • Are you looking for a thicker crust? No problem.  Double both the butter and the graham crackers.  Still bake the Seven Layer Bars for about 20 minutes.
  • The only Sweet and Condensed milk you should be using for this dessert is Borden Eagle Brand.  It just tastes the best.
  • When it comes to chocolate chip flavors, I have tried semi-sweet, milk chocolate, and dark chocolate.  They all taste amazing.
  • ½ a package of chocolate chips and butterscotch chips are all you need; however, I have been known to add a little bit more😊.
  • If you are not a walnut fan, try pecans instead.  These bars are so good with them!
  • Like I said before, between my mom and me, we have taken these old fashioned 7 Layer Bars to every celebration under the sun and they get devoured.

What is your go to dessert when you have to bring one to share?  It is a toss up between this one and Chocolate Chip Cookie Bars. Let me know in the comments below.
