Activities to Include in Your May Lesson Plans for Toddlers
Reading
Help start your toddlers’ love for reading while they are young by including books and reading with everything you do. And it is so easy!
Build a library with all of your/their favorite books (over time) to give them lots of options.
Then head on over to the public library to add in new variety every so often. Free books!!!
Refreshing the library books about every 2 weeks works pretty well. There is always a book or 2 that my kids want to renew.
Songs
Have you ever watched your toddlers when music comes on? They love moving to the beat.
So, of course, you have to include learning songs in your lesson plans.
Music also helps wear them out. Man, I wish I had that much energy!
Songs are so much fun for them that they don’t even know they are learning.
Don’t be shy either, show them your dance moves.
If you don’t have a sound system or Bluetooth speaker, I highly recommend this JBL Bluetooth Speaker.
We have this thing going all the time and the sound quality is so much better than just your phone.
These are my go-to YouTube channels for kids. There are so many other great ones out there too.
Coloring
Help your toddlers work on their fine motor skills and gain hand strength by writing and coloring.
I get my best coloring pages from Google Images and Pinterest. There are so many options on just these 2 sites that I don’t go anywhere else.
If you are looking to stock up on your coloring supplies, because I know how toddlers can fly through them, then you have to check out these from Crayola.
There are so many other brands that I have tried and felt like I just wasted my money because they did not have quality products.
So, I stick with the Crayola brand. I have never been disappointed.

Artwork
Guys, I am just not that creative in coming up with fresh artwork on my own. But I am amazing at following directions or looking at an art project on figuring out how it was done.
Therefore, I head on over to Pinterest because there are about a bazillion ideas there.
Toddlers need to work on lots of different skills, so try to pick projects that include using scissors and glue too.
My kids' favorite art projects were a mask or a headband that they could wear when it was all done.
Outside Fun
Finally, finally nicer weather.
We live where all 4 seasons happen, along with crazy winter temperature swings. Today we woke up to -25°F but tomorrow it is supposed to be 33°F. Yes, that is a 58°F temperature swing. May is a welcome sight!
Or maybe you live in a mild climate and have no idea what I am talking about. Either way, May is usually nice.
Get those toddlers outside! They need fresh air, and you know you need it too.
Just because you are outside doesn’t mean the learning has to stop. Use sidewalk chalk to practice writing. Go for walks and look for letters, numbers, shapes, and more. They are all around us.

Coloring
Shape stamp painting is so fun for toddlers.
Let your kids dip the shapes in that washable paint and stamp in on a piece of paper.
Artwork
Building shape houses or monsters is a blast.
You do have to cut out a bunch of shapes ahead of time but it doesn’t take that long.
Give your toddlers blank paper, help them draw just the outline of the house or monster, and then let them create the rest by gluing shapes on.
If you have a few extra minutes in your prep work, make an example so they know what you are talking about.
Outside
I had never realized how many shapes are outside until my oldest had to go on a shape hunt when she was in kindergarten. They are everywhere.
See how many your toddlers can point out to you.

Coloring
Print off some blank rainbow sheets and let your toddlers use dot markers to fill them in.
If you don't have dot markers, then you have to get these.
Artwork
Cut or rip construction paper apart for all the colors of the rainbow. Your toddlers can glue these onto a different piece of paper to make a rainbow.
Outside
Even though rainbows don’t happen every day that doesn’t mean you can’t search for colors of the rainbow with your kids.
Make lots of colorful pictures with sidewalk chalk!

Artwork
Which artwork projects do you think use the most colors? I like rainbows, beach balls, and flower gardens.
Outside
In May, there are usually flowers all around along with many other colors coming to life.
Play the game Eye Spy with your toddlers to help them learn their colors.

Coloring
Have your toddlers make their mom a Mother’s Day card.
You don’t have to get crazy with it. Use a folded in half piece of construction paper and they can draw a picture on it.
Artwork
Help your toddlers trace their hands on different colored paper. Trace down their arm too.
After they are all cut out, your kiddos can glue them onto another piece of paper and make a bouquet for their mom.
Outside
Grab some small flower pots and flowers and help your toddlers plant a flower for their mom.
So Sweet!

Coloring
You can find color pages for a certain letter or the whole alphabet on Google Images.
Those dot markers I was telling you about earlier are so fun if you have individual bubble letters.
Artwork
Toddlers love getting their hands in paint.
Try out handprint ABCs. After the paint dries, change the handprint in a letter.
Pinterest has so many ideas for this.
Outside
Have your toddlers use sidewalk chalk to practice letters or even their names.
Then let them go wild and make whatever picture they want.

Artwork
Your toddlers can stretch out cotton balls and then glue them to blue construction paper.
From there, you can give them ideas to add raindrops, sun, grass, trees, etc.
Outside
Take blankets outside so your toddlers can lie and check out the clouds. What shapes can they see?

Coloring
Print off or draw bubble numbers. Your toddlers can color them in, cover them with stickers, use dot markers, or even paint them.
Artwork
Guys, this one is so fun.
Draw numbers on white paper with a white crayon. Then let your toddlers use watercolor paint to find all the numbers.
They magically appear!
Outside
Show your kiddos where they can spy numbers when you are outside. The best places to look are on houses, mailboxes, cars, and road signs.
