Best Board Games For Kindergarten
MORE FOR YOU TO ENJOY
I am a firm believer in learning through play. And what better way to have some fun than by playing board games?
Playing these games teaches kids so many things like counting, colors, phonics, strategy, good sportsmanship, and so much more.
And I love playing games with kids because I learn so much too. They all start to chatter about everything important in their life at the moment. Sometimes it is a crazy overload of kid info – so great, right?
There is also the part of getting to spend some quality time with my kids, and daycare kids, that does not involve any kind of screen at all. It is so great!
While I play these games with my kids at home and with my daycare kids, they are also so much fun for kindergarteners to play at school.
So, if you are a teacher or a daycare provider, grab a few of these to spice up your board game selection!
Our Top 5 Favorite
Board Games For Kindergarten
Hey friend!
All of the games on this list are amazing for kindergarteners but these are the top 5 games that get played the most at my house between my kids and daycare kids.
1. Tic Tac Toe
Rounding out our top 5 is none other than Tic Tac Toe!
This one surprised me as to how popular it would be but my kids and daycare kids have it out all the time.
It is so quick to play a round that the kids get caught up in playing it over and over again trying to beat their opponent.
2. Hungry, Hungry Hippos
Coming in at number 4 is a crazy, fast pace, and dare I say loud game of Hungry, Hungry Hippos!
But kids love it and it has been around forever!
3. Candy Land
Our 3rd favorite game is such a classic and young kids go nuts over it - Candy Land.
If your kiddo is anything like mine, then they love getting the treat cards the best and it doesn’t even matter if they lose.
Side note, have you seen the Candy Land backyard birthday party ideas on Pinterest?
Let me know in the comments below. I always wanted to create that but my kids were never on board.
Finally, this year my daughter and her girl scout troop had a Candy Land theme trunk or treat for Halloween. It was amazing!
4. Let's Go Fishing
A close 2nd place is Let’s Go Fishing.
Now girl, every time I play this with my kids I lose.
But I think it is because I hold the fishing pole the correct way, or at least that is what I will tell myself to feel better about losing to 4-, 5-, and 6-year-olds.
Watching the fish go round and round is mesmerizing!
5. Trouble
Coming in at number 1, drum roll please, is Trouble.
No one can resist the Pop-O-Matic on the Trouble game board.
I have to say, this is one of my favorites as well.
More Amazing
Board Games For Kindergarten
All of these games are so fantastic, that no matter which one you choose to add to your collection it will be worth it.
6. Hi Ho Cherry-O
Hi Ho Cherry O works with fine motor skills and counting.
And no matter how hard I try, I hardly ever win at this game.
I am pretty competitive, so I usually play to win. Harsh I know, but I can’t help myself!
8. Wild Kratts Race Around the World Game
If you have a Wild Kratts lover in the house, this is the perfect game to get.
My kids love being able to be the different characters from the show.
9. Don't Break the Ice
Do you have a demolition on your hands? I have a few and they can’t get enough of Don’t Break The Ice.
Too bad they can’t figure out how to put it back together on their own yet.
I have to stay pretty close and be the construction crew when it gets played.
10. Pretty, Pretty Princess
Calling all princesses! I played Pretty, Pretty, Princess when I was a kid and I was so glad I was able to find it when my daughter was little.
She is 11 now, but that doesn’t stop her from playing it with my young daycare girls.
11. Connect 4
I never knew there were different variations of Connect 4, did you?
We just have the classic Connect 4 game but these other two – Connect 4 Spin and Connect 4 Shots – look pretty intriguing.
12. Tenzi
This dice game was not on my radar at all until my 3rd kiddo got it for Christmas last year.
Tenzi has been a hit ever since.
A word of advice, play it on the floor or you will have dice flying everywhere!
13. Twister
Of course, you know this tangled-up mess of a game, Twister!
Kids don’t even realize that they are practicing color recognition and knowing their left from right when they are playing it.
14. Mouse Trap
From time to time, my kids will play the way it is supposed to be played too.
15. Spot It Jr.
This game is so compact that you can slip it into your purse to play on the go as I do. Great in waiting rooms and restaurants.
16. Operation
17. Checkers
Somehow, we ended up with 3 different Checkers board games but they all get used!
18. Chess
Nope, kindergarten is not too young to learn Chess. You know they are little sponges when it comes to learning, so let them give it a whirl.
If you forgot how, like I did, then check out this book. It is old but so good at describing how to play. Otherwise, this book is highly rated on Amazon.
19. Hangman Game
This magnetic Hangman is perfect when you are on the go.
It is a fun way for kids to practice their spelling.
20. Kerplunk
Holy smokes, Kerplunk is over 50 years old! I know that it is not the oldest game on this list but I am surprised it is this old.
Still a fan favorite of young kids, and so simple for them to put together and play.
21. Guess in 10
If you have an animal lover, Guess in 10 World of Animals is a must-have.
There are other variations, and we have them too, but the animal one is our favorite.
22. Perfection
Some kids love Perfection and some can’t stand the anticipation of the pop.
For real, I have a few kiddos that refuse to play this game.
But if your kid loves a challenge and loves to race, you need to snag Perfection for him!
23. Chutes and Ladders
Even though Chutes and Ladders is a classic, I put it at the end of this list for a reason.
My kids like playing this game but of all the games we have, it gets played the least.
You can never tell what they are going to be drawn to the most, or least in this case.
My Wish List of
Board Games For Kindergarten
