Activities to Include In Every May Themes For Toddlers

Reading
Now, friend, I am sure you are well aware that there are about a bazillion books for toddlers these days and we both know how important reading is. So, including reading with each theme that you do is a no-brainer!
I have included our top 5 favorite books to match each theme, 1 book for each weekday. If you are feeling more ambitious than that, there are so many more books you can include.
Please don’t feel that you have to buy all of these books, even though I think building your own library is important. Just buy the books that are the biggest hits with your kids.
A great place to help you with free books is your public library. Since I did daycare, we went to the library often!

Songs
Toddlers love to get up a move about, so why not play learning songs to have them dance to?
You know those kids have ants in their pants, help them get them out.
Songs are such a blast that your kids won’t even realize they are learning and having fun at the same time.
Jump in there with them. Trust me, they are going to love it.
To get the dance party going, play the music through this Bluetooth speaker.
It sounds so much better and can be louder than on your phone.
I have some YouTube channels that we loved to explore for toddler songs.
Coloring
All toddlers need to work on their fine motor skills and building their hand strength. Coloring and writing help with all of these.
My go-to websites for theme-related printables include Google Images and Pinterest.
Don’t forget to check your stock of coloring supplies. Toddlers seem to go through them like candy.
I have tried so many different brands and Crayola is the best of the best. You get the most for your money when it comes to Crayola.
Don't forget about the paint either.
Oh, girl, I know it can be a hot mess to clean up but it is also a blast for your toddlers. Just let it happen!

I wish I could say that I am super creative when it comes to making up amazing art projects to go with all these May theme ideas but I am just not.
Head on over to Pinterest, I love that place, and you can find some easy ones to match the theme you are covering.
I find that you don’t need directions for most projects but only have to look at them to figure things out. Not every toddler’s project is going to turn out just like the picture anyway.
Try to pick projects that include more than just coloring. Toddlers need to practice using scissors and glue also.
And the artwork projects that my kids always went bananas over were masks they could wear afterward.
Outside Fun
Yahoo for May and warmer weather!
I live where it is cold and snowy during the winter months. When I woke up today, the temp was -12°F with lots of snow on the ground. And don’t even get me started on the -25°F Wind Chill that went with it. I am just glad our furnace is running like a top.
Get your toddlers outside. They need fresh air and time to run around.
Use sidewalk chalk to have them write their name, how old they are, shapes, and beautiful pictures. They are practicing fine motor skills through play!
Go on a scavenger hunt walk through your neighborhood, if you can. Point out that numbers, letters, and shapes are in the world all around them.

Type in “weather coloring pages” into Google images.
Since it is May, my favorites have clouds, umbrellas, and anything to do with spring weather on them.
Artwork
Have your toddlers stretch out cotton balls and then glue them to a piece of blue construction paper.
They can color on a smiling sun or raindrops to make their picture complete.
Outside
Bring a blanket or 2 outside and spread them out. Ask your toddlers to lay on them and tell you what shapes or objects they see in the clouds.

Draw bubble numbers and let your toddlers color them in or cover them with stickers.

Using a white crayon, draw numbers on a piece of white paper and then let your toddlers paint the page with watercolors.

Teach your toddlers how to spot numbers all around them. Have them look at cars, houses, road signs, and more.

Do a Mother’s Day interview with your toddlers and you fill in their answers. You can find a Mother’s Day printable on Google Images.
The answers that some kiddos give are hilarious.

Help your kids trace their hands multiple times on different colored construction paper. Then you can cut them out, I know this may be hard for the kids, and glue green paper stems on them.
They will each have a bouquet to take home at the end of the day.
Outside
Teach your kids about flowers and their stages. Some of the flowers may be trying to push out of the ground while others may be up.

Check on Google Images and you will find all the letter pages you will ever need. You will be able to get individual letters or the whole alphabet.

Pinterest has so many ideas for handprint ABCs. If your toddlers are anything like mine, they love putting their hands in paint.
Outside
I love this outdoor activity and older daycare kids can help with it.
Fill your driveway with letters using sidewalk chalk. If you have 5 daycare kids, make 5 A’s and 5 B’s and so on. You are going to want to space them out.
Call out a letter and have your kids stand on them when they find them.

There are so many printable coloring sheets found on Google Images!
Artwork
Rip apart construction paper for all the colors of the rainbow, each piece about the size of a quarter. Then have your toddlers glue them to a rainbow on a different piece of construction paper.

Now, I realize that rainbows are hard to come by so try a different approach.
When you take your toddlers outside, play the I spy game with them.
You can also have them point out different colors around them.

Give your toddlers a blank piece of paper or 2. Let them get creative with free drawing. Encourage them to use lots of different colors!

Have a bunch of different shapes cut out ahead of time. Yes, this one does require some preplanning on your part.
Give your kiddos a blank piece of paper and let them create and glue the shapes on to make their own house.
