1. Backpack
If your son has been rocking a character backpack in the past, this may be the year that he wants to switch it up and go for a solid color.
You will want to go with a backpack that will last him for a few years and Jansport makes solid backpacks.
They are a bit more expensive but they are built to last!
2. Water Bottle
Hydration is more important than ever for 5th grade boys because they start sweating more.
We have discovered the Hydro Flask Water Bottle and it is amazing.
It washes up easily. I love it.
3. Lunch Bag
It might be time to upgrade his lunch bag as well. This is the one that you have to check out.
It is small enough to fit into his backpack but big enough to fit all the food he will need.
You can also put this mini Thermos in it with room to spare. This Thermos holds way more food than you think and will keep his food hot or cold until lunch if you follow the directions.
4. Watch
Gosh, wouldn’t it be nice if knowing how many steps you took was your biggest concern?
Anyway, this watch is a rockstar and it has USB charging.
5. Books for 5th Grade Boys
I always try to encourage more reading because I know how important it is so I usually add a book or 2 in every gift I give.
These books are so great for 5th grade boys. And don’t forget the joke book either! Boys this age love to be goofy, so let him!
6. Paper Airplanes
You are going to be surprised at how much your son will want to create all of these paper airplanes.
Give him a paper bag to hold them all and just let it happen.
It will keep him busy for hours.
7. Legos
Holy smokes, Legos are such a huge thing for 10-12 year old boys and I love it. It keeps him busy and lets him get creative too.
You can go with a Lego set like this one (we just gifted it to our son for his birthday) or go with the classic bricks.
8. Sports Balls
Keep him up and moving with his favorite sports gear.
I know there are so many sports and activities your son can choose but my boys love playing football, basketball, and soccer the most around the house.
9. Sports Cards
Recently one of my friends gave my boys a stack of football cards and they went nuts over them. Then my 5th grader’s buddy came over when the cards were covering my living room floor and he jumped right in the mix.
So, what I guess I am saying is that if your son has any interest in sports, he is going to love the sports cards that match.
I got this card binder for him and it zips all the way around so no cards fall out.
10. Remote Control Toys
My son is into anything remote control. We got him this car, which I love to take my turn on. It is made for inside and out and does amazing tricks.
He also has this helicopter. But be careful taking this outside. It is so light that the slightest wind takes control of it.
11. Nerf Guns
Boys love Nerf guns and I know why, they are such a BLAST!
But of Nerf guns, I do not like all the Nerf darts that I find everywhere! Thankfully I banned the Nerf guns to just the basement so at least they are partially contained.
Anywho, these are fantastic Nerf Guns if you want to pick some up for him.
12. Laser Tag
These laser tag guns are so much fun.
We quickly realized there are sensors on the guns so there is no use hiding the vest!
Since the days are getting shorter, your son and his friends are going to have a great time running around in the evenings playing laser tag.
13. Walkie Talkies
A set of walkie talkies is the perfect addition to playing Laser Tag or having a Nerf Gun battle.
Don’t even bother with cheap walkie talkies, you will be wasting your money. Been there, done that🤦♀️.
Instead, get these man walkie talkies and he will be able to use them forever.
14. Binoculars
Since it is fall, there will be wildlife out everywhere. And if your son is like mine, he is going to want to get out and see it all.
He will be able to get up close and personal with this set of binoculars.
15. Fishing Tackle
Does your son like to fish? You can hook him up with some amazing fishing tackle.
My kids love to fish so getting fishing gear as a gift is a no brainer. I love how it is something that is useful and can be used for a long time.
We fish for Northern Pike, Bass, and pan fish and this is the tackle that we have had the best luck with.

16. Games
Games are so great for spending time together and will give your son something to do with his time that is screen-free.
We love playing board games here. Don’t get me wrong, my boys tell me they never get to play video games long enough.
These are the games that my 5th grader likes to play the most because they are fun and challenging.
